We’re often asked by parents whether barefoot school shoes can actually be smart. Many believe that the unique and developmentally beneficial build of barefoot shoes may take away from smart and stylish design.

Whilst we understand this concern, we’re here to tell you that barefoot school shoes can still be smart. In fact, Prenta's barefoot school shoe range features some of our smartest designs.

Can you tell that shoes are barefoot?

At a glance, you may not immediately know that shoes are barefoot
, but there are some noticeable differences between traditional and barefoot shoes if you know what you’re looking for.

The main indicator of barefoot shoes are wider toe boxes and zero drop soles, which are definitely noticeable from some angles. However, these features don’t make the shoes look any less smart, and they should still fit with any school uniform policy.

Are barefoot shoes suitable for wearing at school?

Barefoot shoes are definitely suitable for wearing at school. They combine comfort with natural foot development and strengthening, and they won’t stick out as noticeably different when compared to more traditional school shoes.

Key features of barefoot school shoes

Barefoot shoes are specifically designed for the purpose of supporting your child’s development. As a result, the following features are incorporated into every shoe to ensure maximum foot health benefits:

  • Wider toe box - Barefoot shoes utilise wider toe boxes to promote toe splay and free up space for toes to move and wiggle.

  • Zero-drop soles - These soles ensure no height difference exists between heel and forefoot, encouraging a more healthy and natural alignment for your child.

  • No arch support/restriction - Many traditional school shoes boast ‘supportive cushioning’ and other similar features. These additions can actually be restrictive, which is why barefoot shoes let feet develop and move as nature instead.

  • Flexibility - Uppers and soles are created to be extremely flexible and soft. This is because stiff uppers can restrict natural movement, and rigid soles don’t allow foot muscles to engage with the ground properly.

  • Adjustable fastenings - The adjustable fit afforded by t-bar fastenings and other available closure types ensures a comfortable fit.
