Kids' barefoot shoes are the best choice for supporting development and enabling natural growth. However, when it comes to finding the right size, it’s important to understand the differences between barefoot and traditional shoe sizing.
Poorly fitting shoes can actually have a detrimental impact on growth, so read this article to learn more about kids barefoot shoe sizes.
Are barefoot shoe sizing different to traditional shoe sizing?
Barefoot shoes are the same sizes, but the fit can differ from a traditional shoe fit. Barefoot shoes prioritise features like wider toe boxes to allow for natural toe splay, whilst traditional footwear relies on more cramped toe boxes. Sizing between brands is often inconsistent, because barefoot shoes don’t necessarily all follow exactly the same build and structure.
Our handy sizing guide can be used to find the perfect fit across our range of barefoot footwear, including school shoes, trainers and more. On top of this, Prenta Shoes unique ‘happy toe zone’ feature allows you to check your child’s shoes are fitting as intended.

Every Prenta barefoot shoe has been tested independently to assess sole, fit, mechanics and stability measurements. So far, every style lands in the pure barefoot.
What can happen to a child’s foot in ill fitting shoes
Children’s feet are particularly soft and fragile, because they’re made from bones and cartilage which are still growing and fusing together. As a result, ill fitting shoes can cause an array of short term issues such as:
-
Blisters/marks
-
Calluses
-
Ingrown toenails
-
Infections

As well as longer term problems:
-
Bunions
-
Hammertoes
-
Nerve compression
-
Fatigue
-
Joint pain
-
Incorrect gait development
How to measure children’s feet for barefoot shoes
The easiest way to measure at home is with Prenta's free printable measuring guide.
-
Download and print the guide to start.
-
Stand your child on the footgauge with their heel placed firmly against the line, then line their foot up against the left edge.
-
Check whether their longest toe reaches or extends beyond the right edge of the measurement box - if it does, size up. It's best to measure both feet, ideally at the end of the day when feet are at their largest, and always fit for the bigger one.
Because barefoot styles are designed with a wider, foot-shaped toe box, don't be surprised if your child needs a different size to their usual school shoes. And remember, measuring is a guide; always check the fit once shoes arrive.
We also partner with SizeWise, a tool that allows you to scan your child’s feet with your phone and find your accurate size.

Where to find reliable size charts and foot measuring guides
Finding reliable size charts and foot measurement guides for barefoot shoes typically relies on each brand to provide their own guides and charts. Whilst there are generic size charts available, kids footwear sizing can vary between brands, which is why it’s best to buy from a brand with their own guide.

What to consider when choosing the right size barefoot kids shoes
There are a few things to consider when choosing the right size barefoot kids shoes.
When to measure:
Firstly, you need to consider the time of day you’re measuring feet. Children’s feet actually swell and lengthen slightly throughout the day. As a result, it’s recommended to measure in the afternoon/evening.
On top of this, you need to ensure you’re buying footwear with just over 1cm of growing room at the front of the toe box (utilise our ‘Happy Toe Zones’ for this).
Consider shape:
Next, you need to consider your child’s foot shape and width. It’s important for little feet to have wiggle room in order to experience the full benefits of barefoot.
Determine whether your child has narrow, medium, or wide feet, and choose a brand which caters for all. Our shoes are generally slightly wider fitting, but this means that they are usually suitable for all foot types in the barefoot styles.
Pick an option you and your child will love:
Finally, you want to make sure that, no matter what brand you buy, the shoes are stylish and comfortable. At Prenta, we aim to combine healthy natural development with modern styles, meaning that all of our pairs of shoes look and feel good on the feet.
